Michigan Senate race brings Canada tariff fight into focus

The trade dispute with Canada is emerging as an issue in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, as voters and businesses weigh higher costs and uncertainty. Canada is Michigan’s largest export market, and a recent study said Michigan households face the nation’s highest per-household tariff costs.

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has criticized President Donald Trump’s tariffs and said voters are paying more for necessities. Republican candidate Mike Rogers has backed Trump’s objectives, while some Genesee County residents said the trade conflict would influence their votes and others said it would not.

Michigan businesses have largely avoided taking sides publicly but said they want the uncertainty surrounding trade cleared so the auto, lumber, energy and agriculture industries can continue operating.
