Rural northwest Michigan workforce shrank faster than state average

The labor force in Wexford, Missaukee, Osceola and Lake counties fell by 3,505 people, or 8.8%, between July 2025 and July 2026, compared with a 4.3% decline statewide, according to state estimates.

Labor experts attributed the trend to an aging population, retirements and a shortage of younger workers. The Cadillac area’s median age rose to 44 in 2024, while openings remained in entry-level manufacturing and health care.

Federal employment data also showed 1,174 fewer filled jobs across Osceola, Lake and Missaukee counties between the first quarters of 2025 and 2026. Employers and workforce officials cited staffing difficulties, though one regional workforce agency said manufacturing activity and business investment continued in Osceola County.
