Benson makes affordability and tariffs central to governor campaign

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said affordability would be the centerpiece of her campaign for governor, citing a University of Michigan analysis that found 40% of the state’s population struggles to pay for basic necessities.

Benson said tariffs affecting trade with Canada had already increased costs in Michigan and proposed negotiating agreements with Canadian officials and other governors to reduce the impact. She also criticized her Republican opponent’s support for the tariffs.

Benson said she would continue working to protect voting access in Michigan, where she said 2 million residents vote by mail, amid a legal dispute over new federal mail-ballot rules.
