Voting-rights groups expand legal fight over Trump election orders

A coalition of voting-rights organizations and former government lawyers has expanded its legal challenges to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on elections, arguing that the measures improperly interfere with states’ authority over voting rules.

A federal judge in Massachusetts made permanent an injunction blocking rules that would restrict mail voting and direct postal officials to implement new requirements. The Justice Department appealed to the Supreme Court on Sept. 6, while advocacy groups continue preparing additional cases ahead of the midterm elections.
