Iran tensions rise as Houthi attacks hit Saudi Arabia

Iran threatened the United States with economic retaliation and claimed it had used an advanced missile against U.S. warships near the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military said its vessels avoided the reported attacks, and no successful strike was confirmed.

Iran-backed Houthi fighters attacked several locations in southern Saudi Arabia, injuring 73 people, Saudi authorities said. The attacks caused fires at oil facilities and other infrastructure, prompting temporary suspensions at some sites.

Iran also announced plans for a restricted maritime zone in the Gulf and a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, where commercial traffic has slowed. The developments have raised concerns that the conflict could spread and disrupt a waterway that previously carried roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
