U.S. objects to UK plans favoring public broadcasters online

The Trump administration criticized proposed UK rules that would require platforms such as YouTube and TikTok to give greater prominence to content from the BBC and other public service broadcasters. The U.S. government called the measures potential “extraterritorial censorship” and warned they could influence what Americans see online.

The administration said mandatory algorithm changes could burden U.S. technology companies and affect journalists and users globally. The U.S. Embassy in the UK urged Britain to withdraw the plans, which the British government says would make trusted public media easier to find and help counter misinformation.
