Diesel prices near record highs, pushing inflation globally

Diesel prices are approaching $6 a gallon, a record high that is adding new pressures to inflation and affecting the global economy. The surge is driven by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, with Russia cutting fuel production and Iran restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. refiners are also selling more of their inventory abroad, tightening the domestic fuel supply and pushing prices higher.

The impact of expensive diesel extends beyond drivers, affecting industries such as agriculture, transportation, and manufacturing. As demand for diesel peaks, farmers and businesses are facing increased costs, which could be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has hit its lowest level since 1982, limiting the ability to ease supply pressures. The International Energy Agency projects lower demand for oil but warns of substantial risks if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

Gasoline prices have also risen, though at a slower pace than diesel, with the average price at $4.15 per gallon. This increase is adding to the challenges faced by the Federal Reserve in controlling inflation. High fuel prices are also contributing to political challenges for Republicans ahead of the midterms.
