Michigan judge bars Kalshi sports prediction markets

In Michigan, sports prediction contracts have been barred after Attorney General Dana Nessel secured a preliminary injunction against Kalshi. Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina signed the order on Tuesday, following a temporary restraining order granted in June.

The order requires Kalshi to use geolocation technology to block prospective traders in Michigan and imposes a $500,000-per-day fine if Kalshi doesn't comply. This action stems from Nessel's lawsuit in March, which claimed Kalshi's sports event contracts violate the Lawful Sports Betting Act.

As a result, Kalshi is officially barred from listing, executing, offering, or settling all sports-related contracts with anyone in Michigan, including in-game betting and moneyline bets.
