Michigan celebrates voter preregistration week for young citizens

Michigan celebrated Voter Preregistration Week this week, encouraging 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote. Governor Gretchen Whitmer designated the week of September 6, 2026, for this purpose.

Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie highlighted Michigan's strong preregistration laws, noting the state's higher young voter turnout in the 2024 election compared to 2020.

Legislation passed in 2023 allows teens to be automatically preregistered when they complete a qualifying transaction at a branch office, such as getting a driver’s license or state ID. Eligible teens can also preregister online, by mail, or at their clerk’s office.
