Colombia’s president eases gun control rules

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has signed a decree easing restrictions on carrying legal firearms in public. The decree lifts a decade-old suspension that required additional authorisation for permit holders to carry guns.

De la Espriella, who promised an iron-fist approach to crime during his campaign, said the measure would not create a free-for-all and that tight controls would remain in place. The restriction was originally meant to be temporary but was extended yearly by previous presidents.

The decree will affect nearly 700,000 people with legal permits, allowing them to carry their registered guns provided their permits remain up to date. Green Alliance Party Senator Ariel Ávila described the move as a 'grave error', arguing it could lead to legally held guns ending up in criminal hands.
