ICE agent kills Mexican national in Houston’s Magnolia Park, investigation underway

On Tuesday, July 7, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, a Mexican national, in Houston's Magnolia Park. DHS confirmed the shooting and said the agent fired in self‑defense after Salgado Araujo allegedly tried to evade arrest, rammed his van into an ICE vehicle, and refused to stop. The incident is now under investigation by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Surveillance footage posted by Salgado Araujo’s family shows the 52‑year‑old leaving his home at 5:54 a.m., driving south on Wayside at 6:46 a.m., and turning east onto Canal Street. The family disputes DHS’s account, claiming the driver was unaware the unmarked vehicles were ICE officers and that he was focused on protecting his work van and tools. The family has called for an independent investigation and has not yet received communication from DHS or ICE.

The DA’s office will review evidence and has been in contact with the Minneapolis District Attorney’s Office to learn how they handled similar ICE shooting cases. A community march was held Wednesday, and LULAC President Domingo Garcia shared a photo of the press conference where local leaders condemned the shooting and urged a thorough investigation.
