Ionia County records first rabies-positive bat of 2026

Ionia County Health Department identified the first rabies-positive bat of 2026, submitting the specimen to the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for testing.

The county’s first animal to test positive this year received a positive result, marking the first rabies case in animals for 2026; no human cases have been reported. Residents are encouraged to take precautions, as the risk of exposure is higher from May through September.

In 2025, Ionia County reported no cases of rabies in animals, underscoring the significance of this new case.
