Amazon cargo plane overran runway at Miami International Airport, killing five

An Amazon Air Boeing 767 overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people. The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary update after analyzing the plane’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders, giving investigators a closer look at the final seconds of the fatal flight.

About two minutes after the aircraft was cleared for landing, the plane was descending toward the runway, and one pilot said the aircraft was going “too fast.” The pilot also made additional comments regarding the aircraft’s excessive speed. The summary notes that several automated warnings from the ground proximity warning system were heard in the cockpit as the plane descended.

Twice the computerized voice warned “sink rate,” alerting the pilots that the plane was dropping too fast, and five times it warned “too low terrain,” indicating the aircraft was flying too low and too fast. The NTSB update does not identify why certain protocols weren’t followed. When the plane was traveling at nearly 140 mph, one pilot released the brakes and moved the throttles to full takeoff power, the steps for a go‑around. Four seconds later, the throttles were returned to idle and the brakes were reapplied, but by then the plane was careening off the end of the runway. An Amazon spokesperson said the company is committed to supporting families and the community impacted by the crash.
