A 13‑year‑old Williamston girl and her 12‑year‑old brother were hit by a Ford Explorer while riding their bikes on the shoulder of Grand River Avenue near N. Meech Road in Leroy Township on Saturday, Sept. 5 at about 11:30 a.m.

The boy died at the scene and the girl was rushed to a local hospital with life‑threatening injuries. Michigan State Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and that both children were wearing helmets, with no drugs or alcohol involved.

The siblings’ mother posted on Thursday that the girl “passed away peacefully” from her injuries. On Sunday the Williamston community rallied in support of the family, launching an online fundraiser that has surpassed a goal of $120,000.
