Ionia Council meets to discuss future data center prospects

On Wednesday night, the Ionia City Council and Planning Commission held a joint informational meeting at the Ionia Theater to discuss potential data center proposals. Representatives from Michigan State University and Consumers Energy presented data on infrastructure and impacts, aiming to educate public officials and residents about data centers.

Associate Professor Jean Hardy from MSU’s Department of Media and Information discussed data center potential, citing Ionia’s water capacity and existing infrastructure on Harwood Road. Residents such as Brandon Martinez and Joseph Draher voiced concerns about site location and utility rates, noting the need for direct Q&A during presentations.

Consumers Energy representatives explained that a data center would not automatically raise electricity rates and that state regulators would approve rates. Hardy emphasized unbiased presentation, and residents will monitor developments as no proposal currently exists, but the meeting set the stage for future proposals.
