CPI inflation report shows August gains and energy impact

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the August 2026 CPI report at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, September 11, showing headline inflation increased 0.4% on a seasonally adjusted basis, accelerating sharply from the 0.1% monthly rise recorded in July.

Over the 12 months through August, consumer prices increased 3.4%, unchanged from the annual inflation rate recorded in July. Core inflation rose 0.3% during August, and energy was one of the biggest reasons headline inflation accelerated, with gasoline prices rising 3.9% and accounting for over one third of the monthly all items increase.

Energy prices overall increased 2.1% during August, while shelter costs rose 0.3% and food prices increased 0.1%. The official BLS schedule indicates that September 2026 inflation figures will be released on Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 a.m. ET, providing the final piece of third‑quarter CPI‑W data needed to calculate the 2027 Social Security cost‑of‑living adjustment.
