Supreme Court blocks Trump mail-ballot rules for 2026 election

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Trump administration’s request to revive new postal rules requiring unique bar codes for mail ballots, leaving in place a federal judge’s order blocking the rules for the November election.

The justices did not decide whether the rules are legal or constitutional, leaving open the possibility that the administration could seek to impose them for the 2028 elections. The decision followed challenges from California and 22 other states, which argued the rules could cause confusion and disenfranchise voters.
