Oakland County sheriff reports fatal shooting of 3‑year‑old boy in Pontiac

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced Tuesday that a 3‑year‑old boy was fatally shot inside a Pontiac apartment, a tragedy he described as avoidable.

The shooting occurred Tuesday, Sept. 15, and the boy was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. At the time of the incident, two adults and five children were inside the home, including the boy’s mother, grandmother, and children aged eight, seven, three, and eight months. Detectives, forensic investigators, and the sheriff’s crime lab were working at the scene Tuesday night, and the firearm had not yet been moved or its caliber determined.

Bouchard emphasized the responsibility of firearm owners in homes with children and noted that the sheriff’s office has provided free gun locks for more than a decade. He urged gun owners to consider the safety of children and other occupants, and said the department would continue to support residents with locks and accountability for the incident.
