NCAA reviews timing protocols after Michigan-Western Michigan game

The NCAA has appealed the end-result of the University of Michigan-Western Michigan football game, which ended on a controversial decision to add one second back onto the game clock. The appeal follows a last‑second Hail Mary that secured a victory for the Wolverines. The governing body reviewed the instant replay protocols used during the final play.

The NCAA issued a statement more than a week after the game, confirming that the replay protocols were not followed appropriately. The statement read, 'Had the protocols been followed, the outcome of the game would have been different,' and noted that the outcome cannot be overturned. The review clarified the procedures for restoring or adjusting time during a replay review.

On Sept. 8, Matt Young, the NCAA secretary rules‑editor for football, issued an interpretation on official game timing protocols to reinforce proper procedures governing the end of either half. The interpretation specifies that the replay official will base decisions on the embedded game clock in the program feed, or the game‑clock graphic if the broadcaster cannot provide one. This will be the Division I FBS Oversight Committee’s only statement on this matter.
