Trump announces US-Denmark-Greenland security deal, expands Arctic defense

On Friday, President Trump announced a new agreement with Denmark and Greenland that gives the United States permanent control over Greenland’s security, ensuring the US can secure and defend the island and the American continent with permanent access, basing, and overflight rights.

The deal, confirmed by the US State Department, guarantees that China and Russia cannot establish bases in Greenland and provides mechanisms to prevent investment in sensitive sectors. Trump said the United States will immediately begin developing a larger military presence on the Danish territory.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s head Jens‑Frederik Nielsen welcomed the agreement, noting it benefits all three governments and strengthens NATO and European cooperation. The agreement is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
