United Way of Northwest Michigan to end operations, state group to step in

United Way of Northwest Michigan announced it will end its operations at the end of September, with the Michigan Association of United Ways taking over on October 1.

The UWNWMI Board of Directors determined the current model was no longer sustainable, and the organization, which was incorporated as the Grand Traverse Area United Way in 1976 and renamed in 1997, will hand over its service area—Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Missaukee, and Wexford counties—to MAUW.

MAUW will process donations and provide 24/7 support through its Regional 211 contact center partners, Heart of West Michigan United Way and Call 211, while county-specific data will remain in United Way’s ALICE Report for community leaders and policymakers.
