Congress divided over how quickly to regulate artificial intelligence

Lawmakers from both parties are split over how urgently Congress should act on artificial intelligence, even as some warn advanced systems could threaten hospitals, financial markets and water systems. A bipartisan bill would allow officials to shut down rogue AI models, but its supporters disagree over the timing and scope of regulation.

Congressional leaders canceled much of the fall schedule ahead of the midterm elections, prompting criticism from lawmakers who want faster action. Some members are instead looking to President Donald Trump’s planned Sept. 24 meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to advance an international AI safety framework.
