Ingham County 911 center works to close dispatcher staffing gap

Ingham County’s 911 center was operating about 30% below its target staffing level, with dispatchers working mandatory overtime. The center handles up to 600 calls a day, and the county aims to increase its full-time staff from nearly 30 dispatchers to 52.

Officials said a new training program, supported in part by artificial intelligence, reduced training time from about a year to less than six months. Starting pay is $24 an hour, with additional earnings available through overtime, training and shift pay.
