Michigan roots shaped bluegrass star Billy Strings

Billy Strings, born William Lee Apostol in Lansing, spent part of his childhood in Muir, where his stepfather introduced him to bluegrass and took him to gigs. By age 8, Strings was playing guitar alongside him.

Strings later moved to Traverse City, where open-mic performances helped launch his career. He has since won Grammy Awards for bluegrass albums and remains closely connected to Michigan, including through his marriage in Wellston and early musical roots in Ionia County.
