Rate hikes keep U.S. home sales near three-decade lows
Annual existing-home sales have remained at 30-year lows since the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in 2022. Updated projections from Fannie Mae and the Mortgage Bankers Association put 2026 sales slightly above 4 million transactions, near current levels.
The Fed’s recent rate increase, its first since 2023, could delay a meaningful housing-market recovery until 2028 or 2029 as officials respond to inflation.
