Supreme Court ends Missouri redistricting dispute, orders use of 6-2 map

On Friday evening, the Supreme Court released a final opinion that disallows Missouri Republicans’ ultra‑gerrymandered congressional map ahead of November’s midterm elections.

The ruling follows a series of appeals: a 2025 map drawn at President Trump’s urging, a voter referendum, a primary election, a Supreme Court denial, a federal court restraining order, and a federal appellate court’s upholding of that order.

In its five‑page decision, the Court not only blocked the Republican map and ordered state officials to use the previous 6‑2 map, but also instructed lower courts to quit interfering, warning them against any move that would “require Missouri to use the 2025 map in the 2026 congressional election.”

The decision may not bode well for other Republican redistricting efforts across the country, which have already stripped Democrats of a number of safe House seats—although Missouri seems to have been uniquely successful in irritating the justices.
