Wayne County tackles long-running Westland homeless encampment

Wayne County officials, led by Parks Director Erika Smith, returned to a long‑running homeless encampment behind a supermarket at Michigan Avenue and Merriman Road in Westland, inspecting the conditions residents are living in.

The encampment sits on county‑owned land, where remnants of the old Eloise Complex can still be found, and residents—both newcomers and long‑term occupants—view the wooded, grassy plot as an on‑and‑off home.

County officials aim to clean the area and connect residents with resources, while ensuring the space remains clear and residents are treated with dignity.
