Supreme Court to weigh seizure of pilot’s plane over six-pack of beer

The Supreme Court is set to hear a case involving whether Alaska violated the Eighth Amendment by seizing Kenneth Jouppi’s 1969 Cessna after he was convicted of bringing beer into a village that prohibited alcohol.

Jouppi received a $1,500 fine and three days in jail. Alaska seized his plane, valued at about $95,000, while the state argues the aircraft was worth less than 10 times the maximum possible fine.

The justices will consider whether the forfeiture was proportionate and whether courts should compare it with the maximum penalty allowed or the specific punishment imposed. The case could clarify limits on asset forfeiture and excessive fines.
