Pennsylvania mail ballot rules remain unchanged after Supreme Court decision

On September 15, Secretary of State Al Schmidt announced that mail ballot procedures in Pennsylvania have not changed since the May primary, following a Supreme Court decision that allowed the Postal Service to tighten the use of mail ballots ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

The decision, part of a controversial order signed by President Donald Trump in March, gives finality for voters and counties, Schmidt said, and the court’s concurring opinion by Justice Brett Kavanaugh affirmed that local election officials have enough time to implement the rule.

As of now, 14 counties have already sent out mail ballots, and voters can register to vote until October 19 and apply for a mail ballot by 5 p.m. On October 27.
