Washington voters May shift Supreme Court balance as five seats up for election

Washington voters may shift the balance of the Washington Supreme Court as five seats are open or up for reelection in November, marking the first time in recent history that a majority of the court’s seats are up for election at the same time.

The League of Women Voters of Washington has assembled a voter guide featuring interviews with every Supreme Court candidate on the ballot. Each candidate is asked the same four questions and given the same amount of time to answer, a standardized format intended to help voters compare candidates side by side and better understand their judicial philosophies and qualifications.

The League also directs voters to additional resources, including candidate interviews produced by TVW, and the Washington Supreme Court Website displays which candidates are vying for which seats. This multi‑source approach is essential, particularly because Washington voters directly elect Supreme Court justices.
