Democrats Block Stock-Trading bill, Denying GOP a Pre-Midterm Win
On Wednesday, Senate Democrats blocked the Stop Insider Trading Act, a bill that would limit congressional stock trading, with a 53‑to‑47 vote that fell short of the 60 votes needed for passage.
The measure would bar lawmakers and their spouses and family members from buying individual stocks, while allowing current owners to continue trading under new notice requirements; it imposes no restrictions on the president or vice president.
Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer criticized the bill as “toothless” and “ineffective as a screen door on a submarine,” arguing that it fails to meet voter demands and is a last‑ditch effort to win face ahead of the November elections.
