Bills introduced to ease Michigan’s health care worker shortage

A new package of bills introduced at the state Capitol aims to ease hiring restrictions tied to criminal records, opening the door for thousands of Michiganders to work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other care settings.

The Michigan Health Council’s 2025 Michigan Healthcare Workforce index projects a shortfall over the next decade of more than 171,000 home health and personal care aides, more than 60,000 nursing assistants and more than 24,000 medical assistants, along with shortages in dozens of other health care roles.
