MPSC approves DTE Electric contracts for Google data center in Van Buren Township

The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a primary supply agreement and a clean capacity accelerator agreement between DTE Electric Co. And Google LLC for a data center in Van Buren Township, Wayne County. The contracts ensure that other DTE customers are not burdened with additional costs for the new facility.

Under the agreement, Google will pay DTE Electric to develop up to 1,600 megawatts of renewable energy and 480 megawatts of battery storage to power the center, which is slated to begin service in December 2027 and reach full load by December 2028. The Commission estimates the project will deliver a $1.7 billion benefit over its 20‑year life.

The approval followed a comprehensive review that included input from the Michigan Department of Attorney General, environmental groups, and other stakeholders. The Commission’s authority in the case covers the terms of the contracts and the protections that keep costs from shifting to other customers.
