Michigan announces $89 million for waterway cleanup

On Thursday afternoon, Michigan officials met at Belle Isle in Detroit to unveil the Reclaim the Rivers initiative, which will allocate $89 million toward cleaning up the Detroit and Kalamazoo Rivers and related waterways.

The funding will come from pollution settlements with companies such as Monsanto and the operator of the Morrow Dam, and will be shared by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

The initiative aims to address decades of industrial pollution, restore fish habitat, and create more riverfront access for the public, with officials hoping to attract additional federal, local, and private support.
