State Police explain why Nassar does not appear on Michigan registry

Michigan State Police said Larry Nassar is not listed on the state’s public sex offender registry because he is serving a federal sentence in Pennsylvania. The department said people who are incarcerated outside Michigan generally have no duty to register in the state and are not visible in its public database.

The explanation followed complaints on social media from the Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office, which had said Nassar was on the registry until the previous week. The office attributed his absence to a Michigan Supreme Court ruling that removed more than 20,000 names from the public database.

State police said Nassar must complete his federal sentence before receiving credit against his Michigan sentences. If his circumstances change and he meets the state’s registration requirements, he would be expected to register, the department said.
