Trump rallies Alabama supporters as Republicans face a tough midterm outlook

President Donald Trump urged Alabama supporters Friday to back Republican candidates as the party tries to hold control of Congress in November. At a rally in Mobile, he promoted Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s run for governor and state Rep. Rhett Marques’ bid for the state’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District.

The rally took place in a deeply Republican state that is not considered a major midterm battleground. The event gave Trump a chance to energize loyal supporters as polls show low approval of his presidency and Republicans express concern about their chances in congressional races.

Trump said he would return to Alabama next Saturday for a college football game. He also repeated a promise of $5,000 checks if Republicans retain control of Congress and later announced checks of nearly $100 for more than 20 million seniors to help cover Medicare Part B premiums.
