MSU officials warn campus about synthetic opioid risks

Michigan State University health officials warned the campus community about cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid linked to more than 100 deaths in the United States. No deaths connected to the drug have been reported in Michigan, though it has been found in the drug supply in Ohio and Illinois.

MSU medical director Tim Spedoske said the drug can cause severe breathing problems and may be mixed into other substances without users’ knowledge. He urged people not to take substances that were not prescribed and to seek medical help for suspected overdoses. Narcan is available free on campus and in areas including Ingham County and Jackson.
