Fire destroys unoccupied building in Jackson

A major fire demolished an unoccupied two-story building on Rockwell Street in Jackson early Saturday. Firefighters responded around 2:20 a.m. After reports of a fire in the 1200 block of South Jackson Street and found heavy smoke covering three city blocks.

Crews switched to a defensive strategy after flames prevented entry to the building. The fire was under control and patrols cleared the area by 9 a.m. No firefighter injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
