Judge keeps $2 million bond in East Lansing physician case

An East Lansing district court judge upheld former Michigan State University resident physician Arpit Saxena’s $2 million bond, rejecting a defense request to lower it to $50,000 and allow him to stay at a family-secured motel with a GPS tether. The ruling kept requirements that Saxena surrender his passport and driver’s license and have no contact with the victims.

The judge cited flight risk and public safety concerns. Saxena was arrested in Georgia after an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted two patients at an MSU clinic. Prosecutor Steve Kwasnik said a preliminary evaluation involving the victims could lead to more serious charges. A preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. in 54B District Court.
