Washington House incumbent faces tight race after fatal paper mill blast

The May explosion of a chemical tank at a paper mill in Longview, Washington, killed 11 workers and shook a community closely tied to the industry. The disaster also drew local, state and federal officials into a response, including the office of Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.

Gluesenkamp Perez advanced from an Aug. 4 primary to face Republican state Sen. John Braun in November. Braun led with about 39.7% of the vote to her 36.4%; progressive Democrat Brent Hennrich received 16.7%. The results highlight challenges from both pro-Trump support for Braun and progressive voters critical of Gluesenkamp Perez’s votes on immigration, voting and school policy.
