Census data show older Americans made up most 2022 midterm voters

Americans ages 45 and older accounted for 66.3% of reported voters in the 2022 midterm elections, despite making up 55.8% of the citizen voting-age population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. People under 45 made up 33.8% of voters and 44.2% of eligible citizens.

Turnout ranged from 27.6% among people ages 18–24 to 68% among those ages 65–74. Among voters 75 and older, turnout was 65.2%. The Census figures are based on reported voting in November 2022.

The source also cites a separate CIRCLE analysis finding that 28.4% of Gen Z voters ages 18–24 turned out in their first midterm, compared with 23% of Millennials in 2006 and 23.5% of Gen X in 1990, when each generation first filled that age group.
