Democrats target 100 women in the House after midterm elections

Democrats are aiming to elect at least 100 women to the House in the November midterm elections, which would set a record for women in a legislative body. The party currently has 97 women in its House caucus, including two nonvoting delegates, and projects its ranks could reach 113 if it wins every competitive race.

Democratic leaders are counting on women candidates in safe seats and close contests, while six vulnerable Republican women may need to win reelection to preserve the GOP’s current total of 32. If Democrats win the House majority, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández said she expects women to help drive an agenda focused on child and elder care.
