Strong El Niño could bring a milder, drier winter to mid-Michigan
A strong El Niño could bring above-normal temperatures and below-average snowfall to mid-Michigan this winter, according to National Weather Service forecaster Bob Dukesherer. He said cold snaps and snow are still expected, but not at the levels the region typically sees.
Michigan State University climate specialist Ryan Shadbolt said the climate pattern involves warmer-than-normal sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific. A mild winter could also affect Michigan ski communities; the state’s ski communities lost $40 million during the 2023-24 winter, another El Niño year.
