Lansing police examine possible links among five river trail deaths
Lansing police are investigating whether five deaths along a one-mile stretch of the Lansing River Trail over the past year are connected. Police Chief Rob Backus said the cases remain active investigations, and medical examiner results are pending in some of them.
Backus said investigators lack witnesses and surveillance footage. One case involved a stabbing, and a person is in custody, but he cautioned that it is unclear whether that suspect is connected to the other deaths. Police are asking anyone with information to call the tip line at 517-483-6023.
Criminologist David Hayes said investigators will look for links among the cases, but added that a lack of social and digital footprints for unhoused victims can make that work more difficult.
