Trump leaves repayment of federal ad costs undecided
President Donald Trump has not committed to repaying federal money already spent on campaign-style ads funded through the Department of Homeland Security. Nearly $12 million in ads have aired under a $20 million contract, according to AdImpact. A White House official said Trump’s plan to use money from his political account for future costs does not mean the government will be reimbursed.
Trump said Tuesday that he and his team would decide whether to repay the funds. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called for repayment and an investigation, while Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune said taxpayer money should not pay for the ads. Sen. Katie Britt, who chairs the panel overseeing DHS funding, said she would review whether the spending was lawful and judicious.
