Xcel Energy plans to transfer Upper Peninsula customers to local utilities

Xcel Energy announced plans to sell its Michigan natural gas operations to SEMCO Energy Gas Company and its electric operations to Upper Peninsula Power Company, pending state and federal regulatory approval.

The transfers would affect about 6,000 natural gas customers and 9,000 electric customers in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties. The companies expect the transaction to close in 2027. Service will continue during the transition, with no immediate changes to billing, rates or customer service, the companies said.
