St. Clair County health department faces dispute over director’s conduct
Employees at the St. Clair County Health Department have raised dozens of complaints about medical director Dr. Remington Nevin, alleging retaliation, intimidation and harassment. County officials declined to commission an independent review and instead are considering workplace consulting and leadership training.
Nevin was placed on a performance improvement plan last month after an internal review of a complaint about an alleged sexual remark. The plan sets expectations for respectful conduct and has no expiration date, county administrator/controller Thomas Hull said. Nevin has denied violating county policies and said he is satisfied with his work.
The local nurses’ union says it collected more than 40 complaints since November 2024. The county health department has had 51 voluntary resignations since Nevin joined in August 2023, though officials said the departures were for various reasons. Nevin’s conservative positions on vaccines and fluoridation have also drawn public criticism and support.
