Lansing businesses eye $25,000 aid for Chavez Avenue name change

The Committee on City Operations approved a $25,000 reimbursement plan last week to help Lansing businesses cover costs if the city changes the name of Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in Old Town.

Owner Bradly Rakowski said the plan could help businesses cover costs such as reprinting materials and notifying vendors, while Executive Director James Lenon estimated that about 30 businesses could receive assistance, with reimbursements averaging about $1,600.

The plan will be considered by the mayor’s office for inclusion in the upcoming budget, and the committee is scheduled to discuss Chavez Avenue at its October 22 meeting. The city faces a decision to balance the neighborhood’s Latino heritage with the allegations against Chavez, and the proposed funds could help cover business cards and letterhead.
