Unemployment claims dip slightly as layoffs stay low, jobs added in September

Initial jobless claims fell to 197,000 last week, down from a revised 199,000 the week before, while the four‑week average slipped 2,500 to 198,000.

The decline signals that companies are confident enough to retain workers, keeping layoffs at a historically low level below 220,000 for four consecutive weeks.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate rose to 4.2% and businesses added 29,000 jobs in September, a modest increase that keeps the market moving despite slower population growth and reduced immigration.
