NFL asks Supreme Court to review prediction market gambling rules
The National Football League urged the U.S. Supreme Court to review a legal dispute over sports prediction markets, arguing in a brief that sports event contracts are gambling and should fall under state gambling laws.
Supporting a petition against Kalshi, the league said the uncertainty threatens game integrity and consumer protections. It noted that more than half of prediction market trading volume on the first Sunday of the current NFL season was tied to NFL games.
The NFL backed Sixth and Ninth Circuit rulings that sports event contracts do not qualify as federal swaps, and disputed a Third Circuit ruling that reached the opposite conclusion. The league said the Supreme Court should clarify how federal and state authority applies to the contracts.
